"Be Still and Know I AM God" ~ Katie Davis, Author, "Awake Joy"

Devotion is attending the sacred flame in the Heart, rather than mindfully wishing to change what already is. Upon awakening, one could say that we are in prayer all day long, during all that is appearing or being done. The still center point of the spirit is the permanent factor underneath all of the impermanent experiences. In this manner, life seems pristine and sanctified, regardless of how the mind and its time might judge it. Ultimately, we are being the sacred flame and we are effortlessly faithful to being the glowing light.

We finally realize that every life encounter is flowing from the fullness within and we profoundly appreciate the sacred essence, within which all is appearing. We are very much present to life, but attention is resting as the Heart, instead of projecting into the mind's life and its problematic situations and conflicts. We have directly realized that we are not separate from the divine and therefore do not objectify this dimension as a separate power, such as in duality. What greater prayer is there than to humbly rest as sacred unity and simply allow wisdom to do its work?

This inner vigilance has a feeling of objectless worship and reverence. We sense overflowing gratitude and divine appreciation. Vigilance prevents the confusion of our outer, conditioned existence from invading our inner space. Attention "protects" the Heart's flame, much like we would protect a candle from the wind. Witnessing keeps the inner space open, free and clear. Through silent and still watching alone, we are then able to recognize the slightest nuance of emotional contraction, so that we are free of reaction, when things go wrong or other than expected.

We are able to be gentle, patient and compassionate with the ego and that of so called others. When we are silently witnessing grief and suffering, this conscious allowing transmutes the negativity into the precious fuel for unconditional love, while the light seems to glow brighter and thrives. By being consciously present, the sacred loving burns everything into itself and only the loving prevails. Conscious suffering may not be comfortable, but it does have an end. We are no longer afraid of suffering or trying to escape it. When we allow the heart to crack open, we transcend into the perfect peace that we truly are.

Forbearance is one of the last gatekeepers to enlightenment and perhaps best described through my father's words. When I was very tiny and crying, he would often repeat the well known saying that every cloud has a silver lining. Yes, we may presently be sorrowful, but the primary focus is on the shining that surrounds it. This attentive light dissolves the misery, just like the morning sunlight gently parts the clouds.
Forbearance is the patient acceptance of how we presently feel, with the deeper knowing that we are safe and out of harm's way. We are able to maintain a sense of equanimity and innocence. This field of innocence is within you right now and it is a pathway to Self-realization; the only true answer to enduring fulfillment. Self-realization is love's conscious completion and is the end of psychological suffering.

The invitation of these teachings is to devote to being love's light, instead of tending to the phenomenal display called life experience. If we deny this light, we will suddenly find ourselves in the world again and get lost in the struggle. When this occurs, we merely shift attention back to being the open flame and we regain quietude and tranquility. In this manner, we might even be able to welcome the opposition of others as a rising teacher for the freedom of our inner space.

When we are able to consciously rest as the pure beingness within, we are an open window for the unconditional love to flow into the life situation and into the world. We unconditionally accept life as it is, without getting lost in the mind's resistance. In the refuge of timelessness, the past fades away and we respect life for the miracle that it genuinely is. This sacred dimension allows a sense of continuity and security in our lives. We are able to accept, welcome and honor the ever changing conditions and seasons of the life situation. Free of resistance, life is graceful and we experience an ease in living.

Resistance seems unique to the human being. Nature provides many examples of yielding to life, rather than resisting. In a tropical storm, a palm tree yields to the wind and then regains its graceful sway. A river yields to its gravitational force as it descends a mountain to enter the ocean. Winter yields to spring, just as the ocean yields to the tides. A bear surrenders to hibernation, rather than weathering the snows. An eagle soars in the sky and simply glides with the changing winds. Daytime gracefully surrenders to the intimacy of the night. Thought free, nature meets life as it is and never slips into time.

Surrender is a powerful transformer of negative energy, so that we become more present for genuine living. We surrender our anger, fears and desires to the grace that knows the way. When we let go of these contracted burdens in this manner, we regain a gentle lightness of being and an outpouring of peace that is simply beyond the mind and its ideas. The mind-made self and its delusion of control and manipulation are finally finished.
Since we have stopped feeding our thoughts, we are also free of the emotional body and its suffering. Instead of trying to make life conform to the ego's wants and need-based insecurities, we rest in "not knowing" and every life experience becomes a mysterious adventure. Uncaused joy surfaces and comes to the forefront as we discover that life, with all of its idiosyncrasies and what the mind might call its imperfections ... it is perfection.

I invite you to be as still as your meditation or church’s alter, while life's complexities, struggles and failures are passing by. They are only begging for forgiveness and in the light of consciousness, darkness cannot prevail. Be present when they arrive, compassionately allow them while they are here, and notice that after their passing, only the love that you are remains. In this willingness, life's greatest nourishment is adoration.

Resistance and Time ~ Katie Davis, Author, Awake Joy

Whenever we resist something, we suffer. Resistance is the ego judging the present moment. It always has its idea of what it would like life to be. When it is otherwise, it resists the form that the present moment is presently taking. Some may not realize that it is actually our own thinking that causes resistance and therefore causes our negative emotions. The ego believes that it is other people and circumstances that cause its emotions to change and it is not so. But don't take my word for it. Observe directly to see how the ego operates and generates or perpetuates negative emotion. When thinking is unobserved and we misidentify with its judgments, it is self-inflicted suffering.

When you are feeling unhappy, turn your attention to your thoughts and notice how they are using you. The intensity of your unhappiness will always depend upon the degree of resistance that you are having against what is. This just is not that wise. The present moment is already as it is. Can you accept it just as it is? Is it possible to actually love the mystery of the appearance and truly be free to welcome all that is appearing, free of judgment?

Since the ego needs time in order to function, it will always resist the now. The now is the space within which the present moment is appearing. The more you are able to be the Now rather than the personal reference point of the ego, the less you will suffer. You will suffer less since you have not misidentified the dreaming "I" and its wants and needs. Free of the misidentification, you are also free of all the ego's thinking that causes you to suffer.

Since the ego is always under some sense of threat, it will attempt to control and manipulate whatever is. Of course, that is impossible since it is. That control and manipulation only causes you and others to suffer. We create more pain which will soon become more pain of the past that will be stored in the body for release.

If you observe the ego, you will notice how it is constantly fixated on the past or future, which obscures the Now that is the source of all true happiness and peace. Whatever past pain that you perceive that you have, it will appear as present conditioning, which is why we do not need to heal the past. It will appear in the present moment as your reaction to the present moment. Likewise, the ego is always attempting to use the present moment to get something in the future. This creates anxiety, worry and other negative emotions. Those desires are also based on past conditioning.

If you are interested in creating no more pain for yourself and others, stand free of time and you will see that you do not accumulate more time and therefore more suffering. The present moment is virtually all that you have. Are you missing it? It is the only true representation of Life as it truly is and the only doorway to presence.

Time = Ego = Stress ~ Katie Davis, Author, Awake Joy

The next time that you are feeling stressful, please notice that you are looking with the eyes of the ego and its required time. The ego will always resist timelessness, since it requires time in order to function.

Within time, the ego will always be resisting what already is or wanting something more in the future. In either case, it experiences stress and anxiety.

No matter how many things the ego resists (fears) or how many desires it attains, it will continue to feel stressful. It has an endless list and it will always want more. Its intention is to complete itself at some future time. Likewise, no matter how many threats it escapes, once again, it is sure that there are more to come.

The mind-made self is lacking because, through notion alone, it has pretended to separate and made itself an object unto itself (there are not two - Pure I and "me") and therefore can never experience wholeness. It can acquire more and more things or befriend more and more people or even marry the perfect mate and it still has not changed the fact that it thinks its a fraction.

That sense of lack will remain as the ego wanders through life and searches for completion and meaning. It just makes sense that it can never realize wholeness as a fraction. In the end, a fraction will always remain only be a fraction.

The ego is threatened that something or someone will be taken away. Whether conscious or not, it is on guard, defensive and under a constant sense of threat. Although it thinks that its strategy is hidden, right there in plain sight is control and manipulation.

It perceives everyone as separate from itself and that concept is based on its own false idea of separation from Source. In fact to the ego, you are not even important as long as you are not threatening or as long as there isn't something that it can get through you.

The only option is to surrender the ego. In this great release, we profoundly realize that you are already whole. We then live fearlessly, free of wanting, since we are already complete.

The key to stress is ego freedom. Consciously, take a deep breath and notice that you return to the awareness of the present moment. As the Now, you are complete, whole, free of time and its conceptual goal.

I do not mean that there will never be times when you are moving more quickly to catch an airplane after waiting through rush hour or some other life circumstance. I simply mean that when you rest as conscious awareness instead of the ego, you are stress free. In the past, we may have blamed stress on time. Now, we realize that stress is inherent in the ego. Further, the ego can only operate in time.

What a relief! Time = Ego = Stress and all are delusions in the Light of Now.

Glimpses of Truth and Awakening by Katie Davis

Questioner:

I am twenty-five years old and a few years ago I started awakening. This powerful energy would rise within and the world around me would seem so new and different than before. But each time, I would go back and get emotionally stuck again. It is like I have a war going on inside my mind. One side is afraid that I don't know anything anymore and the other seems to know just about everything. I have been traveling recently and the new energy would just come up on its own and then fade away. I am wondering if there is a way to maintain this state. Right now, I haven't been feeling well and it seems to take up all my physical energy. Is it possible that this frequency could just go totally away and not come back? I am willing to do anything to get it back.

Katie Davis:

This is such a gift. For awhile, it seems as though there are glimpses of Truth and then the bliss seems to go away. However, bliss cannot disappear, since it is eternal. Eternal means that it must be here right now. The obscurations to Truth are the obstacles of conditioned thought. If you move slightly out of the present moment, it seems as though Truth has disappeared. It may seem that way, however it is not. It is like clouds on a sunny day blocking the sun for a moment. It doesn’t mean that the sun isn’t there. Soon the clouds move away and it is sunny again.

I would like you to take a moment to concentrate on being the inner body. Feel the cells of your body just dancing with life; perhaps in your hands first and then your feet ... now your entire body. Take a moment from the screen and close your eyes. Just observe breath breathing you. No effort required, just relaxed breathing. Observe the breath, right at your nostrils and experience how delicate the breath is. Go ahead, try this now.

Now look around the room that you are sitting in. Just be with it for a moment and look. Go ahead. Notice how the mind labels different objects. It is always attracted to objects. That is what the dual mind does. It separates the subject (the looker) from objects. Shift your attention to the space in the room. Please listen to the space with every cell in your body. Go ahead.

With attention remaining in the inner body, with your eyes closed again, I would like you to look intensely for the next thought. Just like a cat sitting outside of a mouse hole and waiting for the mouse to come out. Watch for the next thought. Go ahead, be alert. If a thought arises, just let it go and look intensely and fiercely for the next thought. Go ahead.

This is Presence. It is from here that I would like you to welcome these words on this page. They are arising from the silence. Listen to the space and the silence from which they arise, while being the inner silence within you.

While you are traveling, such as you have been doing, it is easier to be present. Every scene is rich and new. There is nothing habitual. Nothing is taken for granted. You are looking at things that you have never seen before. Is it possible to experience your present environment in the same manner? See everything and everyone, as though you have never seen them or met them before. It is living completely free of any past whatsoever. There is only here and now. Continue this attitude of not knowing anything, without any labels, looking out at the adventure and mystery of Life, as it appears before you. It is only the mind that pretends to know and what is known is past. To know is always some past concept, a past learning or conditioning.

I am asking you to look beyond the mind, beyond emotion and beyond form. What is beyond the mind cannot be conceptualized by the mind. Let go of all knowing. You have never seen any of these surroundings before. You know none of the people in your life. Even labels for people like “mother” and “dad” have storylines that go along with the label. Look at these people as though you have never seen them before. Nothing taken for granted. Nothing known.

The war that you are speaking of in your mind are two aspects of ego that are in opposition to one another. One is afraid to not know and the other who pretends to know. My question is what are they appearing in? You have perhaps listened to the resistance long enough. Can you attend the space deeper within you that is still. I am not asking you to try to stop the war. Just be the space within which it is occurring. Resist nothing whatsoever. The thinking is powerless unless you identify with the thoughts.Be the still observer as the thoughts travel downstream. If you identify, when you notice it, just release it and shift back to being the space within which they appear.

Turn your attention to the thinker, rather than the content of thought. Who is thinking? Who am you really? In the watching, mind begins to shift from the habitual projecting power of mind to the resting power of mind. This occurs naturally without doing anything. Who is the watcher? Can you watch the watcher?

“I” is a concept, only a word, and we assume that word is referring to the body. This is an assumption that has innocently enough been passed down to us by our parents. We accepted this first assumption without ever even investigating the truth of the matter. Are you really a separate “me,” as you have been conditioned? We have tried to build a life on something that has no foundation; no reality whatsoever.

However, you can’t take my word for it. This must be investigated by you. Go ahead. Close your eyes for a moment. Being the inner body, with your eyes closed, ask the question, “Who am I?” We are not looking for an intellectual reply. If a thought comes up, just let it go. Ask the question again, listening fiercely with every cell of your body, “Who am I?” Where does the “I” thought arise from? Go ahead. Listen and ask.

What did you find there? Is there anyone even there? What is there? Does it have any attributes? What does it feel like? Ask it again, “Who am I?”

This is the gift of direct Self-inquiry given to us by Ramana Maharshi. Every time one of his students had a thought, Ramana would have them ask the question again, “Who am I?” This brings attention back to Itself. The “I” dissolves into the Silence from which it has arisen. Seek the "I" and follow it back to the Heart that you are.

You said that you are willing to do anything that is required; to do whatever it takes. You really don’t have to do anything. It is more like an un-doing. I am asking you to release all concepts, everything that has been conditioned or learned, even the concept of “me.” Is it possible to sit in the uncertainty of not knowing who you are? If you are 100% willing to surrender this “me,” you will meet who you truly are. If you are only 90% willing to surrender that holdback will perpetuate the illusion and will continue to cause suffering. Are you willing to surrender and be nobody? It really isn’t that big of surrender, since when you look, the “I” is nowhere to be found. If not “I,” then, “Who am I?” What does this word "I" point toward?

You have been given the opportunity to realize the joy that you are. When the pain body comes up, just be the watcher. Detached and watching, observing how thought perpetuates the insanity. If the pain body comes up, show no resistance. Just surrender and be conscious with it. Welcome it and allow it to be as it is. Your resistance perpetuates it. Welcome it. It might be a little uncomfortable. It is OK. Don’t try to escape it. Turn inside and look at the fear. What is it? How deep is it? What is its nature? Do you really know fear? You have been running a lifetime from these negative emotions. Go find out what they really are. Walk into the emptiness.

When you identify with negative emotions, you will notice that your thinking begins to align with the negativity and starts telling stories about it. I am not asking you to act it out and I am not asking you to repress it. Just watch it. Make the suffering conscious. Love burns everything into Love. The light of your consciousness is Love.

You say that you are willing to do what it takes:

1. Stop and be still.

2. Resist nothing. Surrender to what is.

3. Welcome the present moment from a place of not knowing.

4. Be nobody.

5. Just by noticing, find out who is surrendering? Who is resisting? Who knows? Who is the one who glimpses Truth? Inquire, "Who am I?"

Surrender, Resistance and Conflict by Katie Davis, Author, "Awake Joy"

Questioner: I want to share something that happened the day after Friday's Satsang. I had quite the day on Saturday. i was in the coaching seminar and the discussion was around our "inner saboteurs" Various people were sharing and I decided to share my feelings. I mentioned quite simply that I found that having/being invested in an "I identity" importance of "my Story" was the major detriment in my life and that allowing the possibility of being "nobody" was liberating.

A woman on the otherside of the room declared that this made no sense and was off topic, the group leader said few people and only "enlightened" masters can "achieve" such a state and moved on before I could finish.

This didn't feel right and the woman next to me felt this and we were sharing notes about this. Another woman across the room said we were distracting her by writing notes to each other.

I thanked her for noticing and said that there was an issue unresolved and I confronted the leader about not honoring the gift I was sharing and that his view on being truly who we are wasn't based upon an impossibility.

At this point the room went wild with intense energy and a woman panicked and said things were out of control and picked up her belongs and left and then other women went to console her.

For an hour there was chaos and it was directed primarily towards me as an agent of provocation. I sat with this energy and spent the rest of the day with a huge feeling in my chest and witnessing the projections in the room and changes in people towards me.

I was exhausted last night and couldn't get out of bed to go to the last day of this "movie"; my body wouldn't let me.

Today I am spending the day in silence, alone, writing and being nobody.

Katie: By now, your day of silence, being alone, writing and being nobody has paid off! Sometimes when we are in deep satsang, the life situation provides the immediate, perfect circumstances to ‘practice’ being only the Heart. Papaji once said that when someone awakens, every “demon” in the universe shows up to call us back to ego.

Only you know for certain whether you were in temptation to energetically react to the situation or in acceptance of what was and then followed by action. Energetically, there is a huge difference between the two. Your opportunity was to accept the situation, first and foremost … free of resistance and judgment. You still may have followed with appropriate action, but the non-resistance is primary. When we judge and resist, we suffer and the situation generally will escalate into more suffering and reaction/resistance from the other. Obviously, your intention was to simply share something useful. Someone reacted and that reaction/resistance was their work. How you receive the reaction is your work and only you can have the clarity of the situation. I know that you are familiar with the principles of surrender … allowing what is. In addition, we need to surrender the ‘I’ since that is prior. When we are truly nobody, there is no one here for reactions to stick to. It is as though you are transparent and rude comments simply pass freely by … perhaps even with a sense of compassion for the ‘other person’ who is identified with ego and therefore living in separation and limitation. Being the power, that is, resting in being, we are impervious to the conditional existence. Our inner space remains open, unprotected and free, regardless of any life circumstance.

In the end, I would also like to point out that the life situation is always a mirror of what is occurring within you. It is a self-projection. When we recognize this, it is our inner work. Trying to fix the mirror is impossible. Like I said at satsang, it is like waking up in the morning and looking in our bathroom mirror and then trying to comb our hair in the mirror. That would be impossible and we just wouldn’t even try. The mirror of the life situation is only a reflection of what is. So we have a willingness to look within to discover if any resistance persists or if there is anything more to surrender.

Stop telling the stories and discover who the storyteller is. Blessings to your work and this amazing journey to the Heart … that you already are.

Can You Just Allow it to Be? by Katie Davis, Author, Awake Joy

Can you just allow it to be as it is? Right now, is it good enough? Truthfully, does anything need changing ... I mean only right now.

Listen to conditioned thought and watch it trying to control and manipulate the situation... constant struggle. Well, what happens if you just give up? Yes, stop. It is plain to see that this moment already is. Is it not true? How could struggling with what already is cause anything more than more suffering. Just allow it to be as it is.

Ok, so you have surrendered, right? Now watch the ego pick it immediately up in some type of victimhood. As soon as you let go to allow the circumstances, it begins telling an internal story of oppression. This is the past that only appears to be alive in you. Can you see that it is only conditioned thought? Well, what if you just allowed that to be as well?

Listen without involvement. Just watch without resistance. Yes, the mind is resisting, but you are not the mind. Can you see that these thoughts are a little crazy? I am not speaking of judging them. Just listen. This is all about the past, the little suffering me, or about the future and its ambition to get somewhere other than where it is. Stop and breathe.

You are not your thoughts. You are not the situation that seems to be causing some type of conflict. You are not these emotions. The emotions are being caused by the problematic thinking, so the body reacts and we call it emotion. Yes, feel it fully. Let the heart crack open and see that only love and peace remain. Welcome the emotions and watch how they perpetuate. Just watch. It is truly amazing, is it not?

The separate sense of self has the idea that it has some type of pseudo power over some other if it could only resist loud enough. Can you see that the dispute is only with yourself? Can you see that true power is to allow it all to be. I am not suggesting that you remain in a situation that is harmful, but in that second, can you see with clarity that it already is? In that clarity arises right action.

It is the quality of your conscious intelligence right now that is the next moment. Can you attend the clarity and attention to keep your inner space open, clear, unprotected and free?

Resistance and Surrender by Katie Davis, Author, Awake Joy

Resistance seems unique to the human being. Nature provides many examples of yielding to life, rather than resisting. In a tropical storm, palm trees yield to the wind and then regain their graceful sway after the storm passes. A river yields to its gravitational force as it effortlessly descends the mountain to disperse into the Ocean. Winter yields to spring, just as the ocean yields to the tides. Eagles soar in the air and yield to the wind's change of direction. Daytime gracefully surrenders to the intimacy of the night. Thought free, nature meets life as it is and never slips into time. When we no longer oppose the flow of life, we feel the impact of relinquishing resistance. The feeling impact is an opening into the expansiveness of peace. We free Wisdom's work to run through us. This Current will carry us to the Joy of the Ocean, if we would just let go and surrender.

Desire and fear are signatures of the false sense of self ... the ego. As pawn to life, the mind made self constantly perceives that it is under some type of threat, whether conscious or otherwise. It judges circumstances from its fractional point of view, which is embodied as either inferiority or arrogance. The consequence is inner resistance and intrinsically carries the imprint of time.

Its effect flows into life as programmed reaction and worldly conflict. Most of all, it provides more occasions for you and others to suffer. Concurrently, the illsory ego is on phobic guard to neurotically defend or anxiously defend its treasured objects of desire.

Residing in future hope or fear from a past perspective, the separate sense of "me" sabotages the here and now as it hungers for personal gratification. Unfortunately, true fulfillment is not personal and it cannot be realized in the future.
